What are new starter Health Assessments?

New starter health assessments are tailored to the specific role. These range from online new starter health questionnaires for office-based personnel to more detailed in-person assessments.

  1. New start health questionnaire

Some staff will only need to complete an online questionnaire, which is then screened by a clinician. This ensures the new employee has an opportunity to confidentially declare any conditions that might impact their fitness for work, and to discuss this with the clinician.

Where necessary, the employee can be contacted to explore a health issue, and consent obtained to advise the business on any measures that may be required to support the employee or keep them safe at work. For example, employees may disclose the presence of an underlying mental health condition, neurodiversity (e.g. ADHD) or a chronic physical health condition.

  2. New starter assessments for health surveillance

Where an employee will be joining a health surveillance program (e.g. noise or respiratory), a baseline medical is required to ensure fitness and for future comparison of hearing test or other surveillance results.

  3. Confirming fitness for specific roles

Certain roles may require confirmation of fitness to undertake the role safely. For example:

    • Group 2 driving medicals for bus or HGV drivers.
    • Safety critical medical.
    • Drug & Alcohol testing may be a requirement for certain roles, where this is conducted as part of a company Drug & Alcohol Policy.
  4. Requirement for industry specific fitness certification

Some roles may require individuals to hold specific certificates before commencing work, for example OEUK or an HSE certificate for asbestos workers.

  5. Immunisation and Vaccination Screening

Some roles may require vaccination at the start of employment, e.g. laboratory staff or healthcare workers who may require vaccines such as Hepatitis B.
